Description
The Newfoundland, also known as newfie, is a large, heavily coated, well balanced dog. They are heavily boned, muscular, and strong. The Newfoundland shows dignity and act proud.


Size
The adult male Newfoundland is 27-29 inches tall and weighs about 130-150 pounds. The adult female Newfoundland is 25-27 inches tall and weigh 100-120 pounds.


Coat
This breed has a flat, water-resistant, double coat. The outer coat of the Newfoundland is coarse, either straight or with a wave, moderately long, and full. The undercoat is soft and dense.


Color
The standard colors of the Newfoundland are black, brown, gray, and white & black.


Temperament
The Newfoundland is a gentle giant. This dog breed has an outstanding temperament. It is a good, courageous, intelligent dog. He is patient, gentle, calm, loyal and trustworthy with a sweet, mild temperament.


Care
Newfoundlands should be brushed daily to weekly with a hard brush to prevent the thick, coarse, double coat from matting.


Exercise
This breed can be lazy and should go on a daily walk to prevent becoming overweight. They tend to gain weight easily. The Newfoundland like to swim and should be given the opportunity if arises.


Training
Newfoundlands may be difficult to train. Train in calm and balanced manner without using your voice forcefully as it is very sensitive to your tone.


Shedding
The undercoat sheds twice a year in the spring and fall. The heaviest shedding period comes in the spring. Dry shampoo when necessary.


Barking & Howling
Not a big barker, but will act as a protector.


Life Expectancy
A well cared for Newfoundland can live 9-15 years and average about 10 years.


Health
This breed is prone to hip dysplasia and a heart disease called sub-aortic stenosis (SAS).
